Reminder - Travel award fifth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-5) for journalists and bloggers

UNEP would like to remind you about a competition (launched on 31 May 2013), in two categories, for the best (1) newspaper or magazine article, and (2) the best blog, on a theme linked with the fifth Global Environment Outlook report (GEO-5) somewhere in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Entries can be in Spanish or English.

GEO-5 in English and Spanish is available at the following link: http://www.unep.org/geo/geo5.asp

In addition, the link below contains some short policy briefs covering the following areas (1) agriculture, (2) biodiversity, (3) governance, (4) water and (5) climate change vulnerability.

In addition to the honor of being the best, the prize in each category includes a US$ 1,500 travel fund to be used to report on environmental issues in an area of the region the winner would otherwise not have an opportunity to visit.

The competition would cover articles or blogs published between 1 June and 30 September 2013. They competitors could focus exclusively on issues relating to GEO-5, or could relate issues in the report to important environmental challenges at the national or local level.

If you´d like to take part, please send (1) a link to the published blog or article, or a PDF together with information on the where and when it was published and (2) a paragraph of not more than 150 words describing how you would plan to use the travel fund if you win. Please send to suzanne.howard@unep.org by 15 October 2013.

The main criteria to select the winners would include novelty of content, quality of writing, context from GEO-5, and scientific accuracy of the published article, as well as the quality of the proposal to use the award.

For blogs, the readership response would also be taken into account. The award would need to be used, and the resulting article or blog, published, by 30 June 2014.
